Hello, thanks for allowing me to join your forum.
I have a 2013 Astra Tourer Auto 2.0 CDTI SRI which I'm very fond of and have owned since Sept 2016.
It's been faultless in the time I've owned it, and has done about 54000 miles, normally goes very well, and has full Vauxhall history.

Today, however after an 8 mile drive at fairly low speeds it broke down.

I had just negotiated a roundabout when a message came up on the display "Stop Vehicle Immediately Engine Has Overheated"
I pulled  over and lifted the bonnet. The coolant and oil levels were normal - it was just serviced at a Vauxhall dealer recently - and the fan was on. There were no leaks underneath.

Re starting the engine, it sounded not well at all, very rattly.

My car was recovered on a lorry to the Vauxhall dealer in my home town.
As soon as the recovery driver started the engine, the temperature gauge went up to maximum with the same overheating warning on the display and "binging" noise. Even though the car had been sitting for about 25 minutes with the engine off.

So I'm waiting for the Vauxhall dealer to give me a diagnosis tomorrow. I'm really hoping it's not terminal !

Has anyone on here experienced anything similar with their Astra ?
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like it could be a sensor at fault.

This happend to mine it was like that for a fhew days took it the garage they reset it and everything was okay I did have low oil in mine due to the turbo burning oil slightly I have replaced new turbo fine for a fhew days now it's saying on op-com turbo boost not learned ?

The boost needs to be learned MDI job only.

Thanks for your replies to this. At the moment I'm still waiting for the Vauxhall garage to get back to me. The car is still under warranty, so I'm hoping it will be covered.

Just got my car back. The Vauxhall garage said it just needed a software update, £70 charge for it. They said it was not necessary to replace any components.
So it's going fine again now, keeping my fingers crossed it's going to stay that way !

Anyone with an MDI and access to SPS can do it.

@Dennis S glad you got your car back however I would of argued over the £70 for a software update as there was a fault with the software which they've issued an update for it should be applied FOC.

I was just glad the engine wasn't knackered ! And I didn't buy it from that Vauxhall dealer either, so I was happy to cough up £70 and get my car back running ok again.
Is this software problem something you've had a problem with youself Rusty ?

Is this software problem something you've had a problem with youself Rusty ?

I've had many "software fault's" but not the one you had, its what they do blame the software as it's cheaper for them if the car is under warranty as they then fob the customer off to pay for it.

Yesterday I spoke to a guy that works for the recovery firm that rescued my car.
He said that a couple of days later they had rescued an Insignia with exactly the same fault.
The Insignia's owner got a software update at a Vauxhall garage, the car ran ok for 50 miles or so, then broke down again with the same fault.

Happened to mine recently. Most common are Temp Sensor either 1 or 2 faulty.
Mine just happened to be the water pump was collapsing so caught just in time. New Cambelt, Water Pump & Aux belt just for good measure.

Denis, Pedro: did the software upgrade fix your issue? I have the exact same problem with my 2014 Astra 2.0l diesel.

Hi this happened to my insignia last Yr, exactly the same fault as described, the issue was with the exhaust gas temperature sensor, there's two on my engine, pre and post cat if I remember correctly, could be either one, not that difficult to change and cost about £100 each

My zafira c did this on Sunday left it over night to cool down now it will not start. It turns over but not starting

This happened to me last night. All of a sudden the engine overheating warning was on and the car cut out. 2 hours later I was towed to my garage where they said the issue was either wrong fuel or a terminal engine fault. Theta re taking it to a engine specialist who I’m hoping will look at the sensors as the AA man couldn’t get his machine to connect to my car to look at any fault codes. This happen to

Hi all

I encountered exactly the same issue. Just negotiated roundabout and the warning showed up on the car computer.. Pulled to the bus stop and turned the engine off.
Vauxhall Astra 2014 Sport Tourer 2.0 CDTI

I am just being towed to the mechanic. Hopefully it is just a sensor.

Hello all. First Post, but have experience of this on my astre J 2.0 cdti. Codes were related to exhaust gas temp sensors, fault kept coming back despite sensors being changed. Found to be a fracture in the loom where it forks near the ecu. Hope this helps somebody.

I have had this on Tuesday here the regen light came on give it a run on motorway the re gen light went off  came off  motorway and the car shut down temp went straight to red and car barely driveable lucky was early in the morning going to work. Pulled over thought the gasket had gone expect to see water everywhere all dry he coolant full

. Parked it up left it for a good 6 hours came back got the car to stRt temp straight to red and engine clattering like mad. Got it on loader  to mates garage as I thought engine knackered. He said it’s electrical his mate works at Vauxhall he out tech 2 equipment on it he has said crank shaft sensor Needs  a clean and ecu needs re prog. It does smell very rich on the sound of clatter on start up of car when u Rev  it. It’s having sensor cleaned and off to  Vauxhall wish me luck

I’m having the same prob my car had DPF full was on motorway it cleared came off I had the same the car shut down and limped around the round about lucky it was early in the morning. Pulled over  coolant all full no steam leaks under bonnet.

Left it parked for a good 6 hours started engine straight red on thermostat on dash same error and engine. Sounds awful. You rev it and smells very rich strong diesel smell. 

Got to garage mate works at Vauxhall put tech 2 on it  he said crank shaft needs cleaning or replacing. Nd ecu needs a re program surely the heat sensors need replacing too it’s on its way to Vauxhall

Had my car fixed fully on Thursday just gone. First garage thought it was a terminal engine fault but as mentioned in the thread the exhaust temp sensors read over 1000 degrees so it then dumped all the diesel into the engine to cool it down (obviously a bad fault on Vauxhall’s part). £400 for new air filter & oil filter plus the entire engine + exhaust system to be emptied of diesel, Then they cleared the dpf as it wouldn’t regen by itself. After this it went to Vauxhall for a software update which was £145 (had to buy car pass codes) and so far no issues. I did do a 300mile drive without the software update and the car was fine but don’t particularly want to spend £400 again to clear the filters etc. Vauxhall dealership was pretty shoddy and had no clue about anything but the guys working in service knew what was going on.
